'But Some of Us Are Brave' Reading Group & Related Projects

BRAVE from PBS site
Miller Learning Center, Registration Required (See below)

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the publication of All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men, But Some of Us Are Brave, an anthology that solidified Black Women's Studies as a field of inquiry centering the voices, experiences, and intellectual contributions of Black women. The book was co-edited by UGA emeritus professor, Dr. Patricia Bell-Scott.

READING GROUP:

In honor of this important anniversary, the Institute for Women’s Studies and the Institute for African American Studies are proud to sponsor a reading group to revisit (and for some of us, visit for the first time) selections from this revolutionizing text and other recent work highlighting its impact. Faculty, grad and undergraduate students, and community members are all welcome to participate. You must REGISTER to attend the reading group.

MINI GRANTS FOR RELATED STUDENT PROJECTS:

With the generous support of Dr. Bell-Scott, grad and undergraduate students who participate in the reading group, as well as students who study excerpts from the book on their own or in their classes, will have the opportunity to apply for small grants (ranging from $100-$250) in order to undertake creative responses to the book. These may take the form of conventional papers, as well as creative work, including poetry, fiction, playwriting, visual arts, and dance informed/inspired by But Some of Us Are Brave. Awarded students will display/perform/discuss their work at a symposium to be held in Spring 2023.

Applications should be submitted to TLHAT@uga.edu (with the subject line "BRAVE Proposal") and include the student’s name, contact information, and degree program, as well as a 1-2 paragraph summary of the planned creative responses. Applications will be accepted until November 18 and decisions will be made by December 1.

Contact TLHAT@uga.edu for more info.
