EETI Director and Professor of Engineering Education Julie P. Martin’s professional mission is creating environments that elevate and expand the research community. She is the Director of the Engineering Education Transformations Institute (EETI) and Professor of engineering education. Dr. Martin is an international expert in how engineering students develop and use social capital; her 2009 NSF CAREER-sponsored research provided the first operationalized for social capital for the field of engineering education. Her research agenda on diversity, equity, and inclusion, which includes work on social capital and methodological activism, expands the research community’s capacity to solve persistent challenges in broadening participation by elevating the experiences, assets, and voices of traditionally marginalized groups. To learn more about her research, visit the Elevate team website. Dr. Martin is a former program director in the Engineering Education and Centers Division at the National Science Foundation. She is a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education, where she has held a variety of national leadership positions. In her role as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, Dr. Martin’s vision is to create a culture of constructive review for academic publishing. She has two degrees in Materials Science and Engineering – her BS from North Carolina State University and her PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
