The University of Georgia (UGA) Hugh Hodgson School of Music and the Institute for Women’s Studies invite applications and nominations for the position of assistant professor of women’s studies and musicology or ethnomusicology. Applicants meeting the minimum requirements are encouraged to apply.  This is a joint appointment between the two disciplines on campus; the tenure home will be in Music.  Anticipated start date is August 1, 2019.

 

Responsibilities of the Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies and Musicology or Ethnomusicology

  • Teach courses in women’s studies and in musicology or ethnomusicology at the undergraduate through graduate levels. The teaching load is normally four courses per year (two in each area) and includes supervision of graduate teaching assistants.
  • Conduct research and creative activity in these two fields.
  • Participate in activities related to the academic mission of the university, including service on committees, student advising, student recruiting, and administration of area assessments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree appropriate for the discipline.

 

Additional Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in musicology or ethnomusicology.  ABD applicants with a terminal degree transcript on file no later than nine months from the appointment date may be considered.
  • At least one academic year of college-level teaching experience in one of these fields.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies

  • Evidence of training, expertise, and commitment to women and gender studies.
  • Musicology applicants whose scholarly expertise broadens the current research profile of the musicology faculty, and ethnomusicology candidates with a background in the musics of Asia or Latin America are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students and faculty.
  • Interest in making interdisciplinary contributions to other academic units and to academic or performance-based areas of the school.
  • A desire to contribute to a dynamic, holistic music program located in a city known for its music and arts culture.
