WMST 1000. Seminars on Women's
Studies and Gender (1 to 3 hours - repeatable for maximum
3 hours credit.)
Oasis Title: WMST SEMINAR.
Prerequisite: Permission of department.
This course will expose students to current research in women's and
gender studies by requiring them to attend seminars sponsored or approved
by the Women's Studies Program.
Non-traditional format: One hour seminar. Students may take this course
in conjunction with their enrollment in a 3-credit women's studies
class. Students are required to attend eight seminars and to write
eight response papers for one credit hour.
Offered fall and spring semesters every year.

WMST 1110-1110D. Multicultural Perspectives on Women in
the United States (3 hours)

WMST 3010. Critical Feminist Readings. (3 hours)
Oasis Title: CRIT FEMINIST READ.
Prerequisite: WMST 1110 or WMST 2010.
Students will learn basic methods of feminist critical reading. This will prepare them to better read and understand feminist theory. Topics will include feminist critical thinking, media literacy and criticism, and text interpretation, including both written and multimedia texts.
Offered every year.

WMST 3100. Lesbian and Gay Studies (3 hours)
Oasis Title: LESBIAN GAY STUDIES.
Prerequisite: Third-year or senior standing
or permission of department.
Investigation of same-sex desire, heterosexuality, homosexuality, and
the regulation of sexual identities across different racial/ethnic
and class/regional communities. Focusing on Native American, African
American, Latino, Asian American, and international studies, with texts
from law, anthropology, history, film, fiction, and theory.

WMST 3110. Gender, Race, Class, Sexuality (3 hours)
Oasis Title: GNDR RACE CLASS SEX.
Prerequisite: WMST 1110-1110D or WMST 2010 or permission of department.
Interdisciplinary examination of social issues of race, class, ethnicity,
and sexuality as they contribute to the lives and identity formation
of diverse women in the United States. Special attention paid to African
American, Asian American, Latin American, and Native American women.

WMST 3250. Issues in Women's Studies (3
hours - repeatable for maximum 12 hours credit.)

Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing or permission of department.
Topics of scholarly interest on women and gender from interdisciplinary
perspectives. Assumes no prior background in women's studies.

WMST 3260. Gender and Popular Culture. (3 hours)
Oasis Title: GENDER POP CULTURE.
Prerequisite: WMST 1110 or WMST 2010.
Examination of popular culture, highlighting analyses of gendered representations as they intersect key cultural moments. Throughout the course, students will draw from relevant current events, feminist cultural studies scholarship, and personal experience to discuss social identity, production and consumption, regulation, and representation.

WMST 3500. Women in the Caribbean (3 hours)
Oasis Title: WOMEN IN CARIBBEAN.
Prerequisite: WMST 1110 or 2010 or permission of
department.
This course covers a range of issues affecting women in the various
parts of the Caribbean region. It examines the meaning of feminism
within the Caribbean context. It considers the ways in which race,
gender, class, ethnicity, language, sexuality, and other factors
affect the formation of Caribbean women's identities in the modern
world.

The historical origins, philosophical assumptions, and political
implications of contemporary feminist theories, including conservative,
liberal, radical and ecological feminist theories.

WMST 4011. Understanding Research in Women's Studies (3
hours)
Oasis Title: RESEARCH IN WMST.
Prerequisite:WMST 1110 or 2010 or permission of department.
Exploration of the assumptions and procedures of interdisciplinary
research in the humanities and social sciences with specific attention
to the purposes and processes of generating knowledge about women,
gender, and feminism. Investigation and comparison of various qualitative
and quantitative approaches, including narratives, ethnographies,
and surveys.

WMST(AFAM) 4060/6060. Black Feminism. (3 hours)
Oasis Title: BLACK FEMINISM.
Undergraduate prerequisite: WMST 4010.
Examination of the ideas and practices of black feminists and womanists. Students will examine African communities within the diaspora, particularly the historical and contemporary debates of black women in the United States, including black womanhood, sexual mythologies and vulnerabilities, class distinctions, and the origins of black feminist thought.

WMST 4120/6120. Sex, Politics, Science, and Reproduction(3

Examination of the science, lived experience, and politics of sexed and gendered bodies. Topics include feminist critiques of sex differences research and evolutionary theory, the role of rhetorical language in the biological sciences, the history of obstetrics and midwifery, race and reproductive justice, the politics of infertility and prenatal genetic testing, ecology and maternal body, and the science and medicine of sex, gender, and sexuality.

Gender (3 hours)
Oasis Title: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN.

Graduate prerequisite: WMST 4010/6010 or permission of department.
Explores gender construction and identity formation in international
perspective. Case studies may be drawn from Africa, Asia, the Middle
East, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Topics include theories and
methodologies for examining gender relations in cross-cultural perspective,
political and socio- economic status of women, gender ideologies
and symbolic representations, women's activism.

WMST 4140/6140. French Feminisms. (3 hours)
Oasis Title: FRENCH FEMINISMS.
Prerequisite: WMST 4010.
Traces the development of feminism in France, beginning with Simone de Beauvoir’s path-breaking book The Second Sex and including such authors as Luce Irigaray, Hélène Cixous, and Julia Kristeva, Monique Wittig, Antoinette Fouque and others.

WMST 4170/6170. Enviroment, Gender, Race, Class (3
hours)
Oasis Title: Env GDR RACE CLA
Undergraduate prerequisite: WMST 3010 or WMST 4010/6010 or permission of department.
Graduate prerequisite: WMST 4010/6010 or permission of department. Examines the ways in which the enviroment, gender, race, and class are categorized. Students will critically evaluate notions of gender, race, and class as they relate to the enviroment. Topics include development, population, production, consumption, ecofeminism, enviromental justice, and enviromental racism.

Roles of women in music, including the history of women musicians in western art music, world cultures, and popular music. Gender studies in music.

Oasis Title: GENDER MUSIC VIDEO.
Undergraduate prerequisite: Third or fourth year standing of POD.
Graduate prerequisite: WMST 4010/6010 or permission of department. Examination of music videos from the 1980s until the present. Music videos will be treated as texts from which we can glean cultural understanding as well as explore new ways of analyzing aesthetic communication and musical meaning.

Oasis Title: LATINA STUDIES.
Undergraduate prerequisite: WMST 4010.
The study of Latina lives from a feminist perspective. Examination of research and writing about the lives of Latina women with a particular focus on the dynamics of communities in the United States, immigration, cultural values regarding gender, and effects of poverty and violence.

WMST 4690/6690. History of Sexuality. (3 hours)
Oasis Title: History of Sex
Prerequisite: WMST 4010/6010 or Permission of Department
Examining the phenomenon of sexuality historically opens up rich questions about the motors of change over time, the nature of power, the limits of social variation, and even about knowledge itself. We use this subject matter to consider historical method and to analyze, research, communicate and persuade in written work.

WMST 4900. Senior Seminar: Integration of Theory and Practice (3
hours)

Advanced study of issues concerning women of diverse backgrounds,
including women's health, employment, reproduction, sexuality, marriage
and family, media representation, and socialization. Emphasis is

This course provides a multidisciplinary, transnational introduction to the discipline of women's studies for those graduate students with little or no background in the field. Topics of study include labor markets, health, reproduction, socialization, language, media representations, law, and public policy.

WMST 7060. Black Women's Narratives (3 hours)
Oasis Title: BLACK WOMEN'S NARR.
Prerequisite: WMST 6010 or permission of department.
Theoretical and methodological issues in the study and use of black
women's narratives. The course also focuses on how gender, ethnicity,
culture, class, and socio-historical context are reflected in various
kinds of narrative texts.

WMST 7070. Feminist Ethnography (3 hours)
Oasis Title: FEM ETHNOGRAPHY.
Prerequisite: WMST 4010/6010 or permission of department.
Ethnographic research and writing and how it is shaped by gender,
race, class, and other markers of social difference. Issues of identity
politics, power relationships, ethical dilemmas, and representational
strategies will be explored. Students will engage in critical reading
of classic and contemporary ethnographies and term projects entailing
qualitative methods.

Exploration of gender construction and identity formation in transnational perspective. Topics include theories and methodologies for examining gender relations in cross-cultural perspective, political and socioeconomic status of women, gender ideologies and symbolic representations, and women's activism.

Oasis Title: MEDIA AND DIVERSITY.
Exploration of the intersections of media culture (i.e., production, representation, consumption, and identity), commercial media imperatives, social constructions of race and gender, and consumer culture. Students engage in media analysis and criticism. Scholarship on race, gender, and media. Media literacy and activism are vital components of the course.

Oasis Title: FEMINIST PEDAGOGY.
An examination of the major feminist theories discussed in contemporary
literature in relation to educational structures and processes. Includes
feminist analyses of education, theories of feminist pedagogy, impact
of positionality on teaching and learning, and women's learning and
development.

WMST (SOCI) 8290. Global Perspectives on Gender (3 hours)
Oasis Title: Global Gender.
This course is designed as an analysis of the intersections among gender, race, class, and nation in different parts of the world. Central to the course is the critical examination of common assumptions about the relationship between the ‘first’ and ‘third’ worlds through the analysis of a range of substantive topics, which may include colonialism, nationalism, tourism, war, social protest, globalization, and immigration.
