Susan Thomas awarded fellowship to the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University

Congratulations to Dr. Susan Thomas, who has been awarded a fellowship to the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University.

Dr. Thomas, who is jointly appointed with Women's Studies and the School of Music, will be the Greenleaf Scholar-in-Residence for 2015-2016.

Tulane’s prestigious Stone Center for Latin American Studies is world-renown for Musicology/Ethnomusicology. This is not only a wonderful opportunity and honor for Susan, but a distinction that reflects positively on UGA.

 

IWS Director Juanita Johnson-Bailey receives the AAUW Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award

Athens, Ga. – Juanita Johnson-Bailey, director of the Institute for Women's Studies at the University of Georgia, has been named the 2015 recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award, an honor given by the American Association of University Women for outstanding contributions to equality and education for women and girls.

Chris Cuomo, professor of Women's Studies and Philosophy at the University of Georgia, was featured on CUNYtv's show, Italics - Television for the Italian American Experience, for it's Women's History Month episode.

This episode focuses on Italian American women in the public eye. Pop icon who often refers to, embraces, and sometimes seemingly desperately clings to her Italian roots: Madonna Louise Ciccone, aka Madonna. Kay Turner (The New School) and Chris Cuomo (University of Georgia) discuss the “Material Girl” as Italian American woman.

Athens Fibercraft Guild honors Women's History Month with weaving exhibit by local women artists in IWS

The Athens Fibercraft Guild is collaborating with the Institute for Women's Studies at UGA to honor Women's History Month with an exhibit of weaving by local women artists, displayed in the IWS offices in Gilbert Hall.  The 2015 national Women's History Month theme is Weaving the Stories of Women's Lives.

 

We invite you to stop by our offices and check out the exhibit Monday - Thursday between the hours of 9am-11am and 2pm-4pm.  Exhibit not open for viewing on Fridays.

 

The exhibit will be on display until April 17, 2015.

Juana María Rodríguez to deliver 21st annual Andrea Carson Coley lecture in LGBT Studies

Athens, Ga. – Juana María Rodríguez, Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver the 21st annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture at the University of Georgia on Friday, April 10 at 12:30 p.m. in the Special Collections Library.

 

Rodríguez’s lecture, “Sexual Affects: Visualizing Pleasure, Troubling Politics” will follow a reception honoring the Coley family at 11:30 a.m. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.
