2004 Andrea Carson Coley Lecture: Dr. Joan Roughgarden

joan roughgarden imageDr. Joan Roughgarden will deliver the 10th annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture February 2, 2004 at the Georgia Museum of Art

Dr. Joan Roughgarden is an evloutionary ecologist at Stanford University and the author of "Evolution's Rainbow: Diversity, Gender, and Sexuality in Nature and People."

From the jacket of Evolution's Rainbow

Evolution's Rainbow is a celebration of diversity and affirmation of individuality in animals and humans. A distinguished evolutionary biologist, Roughgarden takes on the medical establishment, the Bible, social science--and even Darwin himself. She leads the reader through a fascinating discussion of diversity in gender and sexuality among fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, including primates. Evolution's Rainbow explains how this diversity develops from the action of genes and hormones and how people come to differ from each other in all aspects of body and behavior. Roughgarden reconstructs primary science in light of feminist, gay, and transgender criticism and redefines our understanding of sex, gender, and sexuality. Witty, playful, and daring, this book will revolutionize our understanding of sexuality.

The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture was endowed by a donation by Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter Andrea Carson Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in the Women's Studies Program. Each year, the Andrea Carson Coley Lecture brings to campus scholars who are doing cutting-edge research in the field of lesbian and gay studies.

Women's Studies is honored to have Dr. Joan Roughgarden as our 2004 Andrea Carson Coley Lecturer. This year's lecture will be February 2, at 12:15 in the M. Smith Griffith Auditorium in the Georgia Musem of Art on the University of Georgia campus. A reception honoring the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30.
